William ‘Bill’ Gerlich

RAPID RIVER - William "Bill" Gerlich, 65, of Rapid River, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, at his home following a lengthy illness.

Bill was born May 10, 1947, in Harvey, Ill., the son of Robert and Mabel (Franke) Gerlich.

He was united in marriage to Barbara Ann Lock on Aug. 30, 1969, in Evanston, Ill.

Bill served his country proudly in the United States Army, working as a colonel's driver while stationed in Germany. He was also a member of the Rapid River American Legion Post 301. Bill retired from the Ameritech Phone Company after 30 years. He was active with the Boy Scouts of America in many capacities and also for the Order of the Arrow in Illinois. Bill assisted with the Meals on Wheels program that served the Gladstone/Rapid River area.

Bill is survived by his wife, Barbara; son, Robert (fiancee, Christine) Gerlich of Illinois; daughter, Bridget (Christopher) Graham of Illinois; three grandchildren, Jade, Damien, Dragan; sister, Donna (John) Barstad of Illinois; niece, Robin Strickland; nephew, John Barstad; niece, Danielle Barstad; and stepmother, Lillian Long of Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his infant son, William; and granddaughter, Christina Graham.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Congregational Church in Rapid River. Military Honors will be presented at 11 a.m. at the church by the Rapid River American Legion Post 301. Memorial services will follow with Rev. Bill Rafuse officiating. A luncheon will follow services in the church fellowship hall.
