Proposal 3 will raise Michigan's Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) by 2025 from 10 percent to 25 percent for the retail sale of electricity to be produced by wind, solar, biomass and hydro.
Proposal 3 will also limit the ability of the utilities to raise your rates by not more than 1 percent per year to meet this compliance and requires the legislature to enact additional laws that promote the use of Michigan materials and work force in the fulfillment of the RPS.
When an RPS of 10 percent was initiated, Michigan also passed a net metering law, which forced the utilities to pay the same for renewable energy as the customer paid the utility for the purchase of their electricity.
Presently our money is leaving the state for the purchase of polluting fuels like coal and oil to produce our electricity, which weakens our economy. So, a 25 percent RPS will set us on the goal toward energy independence making our state stronger fiscally and economically.
Proposal 3 will also promote job growth. States with similar RPS goals, report an increase in jobs and, since wind and sunlight are free, a decrease in the size of their energy bills. Michigan projects over 90,000 jobs will be created by this proposal.
Lastly, Proposal 3 will motivate electrical utilities to give incentives for their customers to install solar and wind generators to add to the diversity of the utilities portfolios.
Thus, proposal 3 is a win for Michigan consumers, creating jobs, reducing energy bills and producing a cleaner environment for our children's future. Let us not be intimidated by scare tactics of the utilities and big corporations. Vote yes on proposal 3.
