ESCANABA - The 2nd Military Appreciation Night will be held on Friday, Oct. 12, at 6 p.m., in honor and appreciation of military personnel and veterans from our community. The event will be held at the Danforth Place and is sponsored by the Delta County Jaycees.
The evening will feature a Flag Folding Ceremony, Taps, and Patriotic music performed by local musicians. The keynote speaker will be Colonel Vance P. Visser of Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.
The recipient of the prestigious 2012 Citizen Patriot Award will also be revealed and honored. The criteria for the award is "Exemplary Love, Honor, and Service; to God, Country, and Community."

Two local students will also be honored with a "Patriotism Essay Award." Area fifth-grade teachers are asked to have their students write a half-to-one page patriotic essay. The two chosen nominees will receive the privilege of reading their essays at the banquet honoring our veterans that evening. All written essays will be sent overseas to area servicemen and women.
Tickets are available at Gust Asp, White's Grocery, and Grain 'N Grape through Friday, Oct. 5. Cost of the evening is $20, which includes a two entree buffet of roast beef au jus, turkey with dressing, mashed potatoes, Green Beans Almondine, buttered corn, homemade spaghetti, super salad bar, fresh-baked rolls, dessert bars, cake, and coffee.
All of the proceeds will go to the U.P. Honor Flight program, as well as to support local veterans and to send care packages to local deployed servicemen and women.
