ESCANABA - Foster Grandparents serving Delta, Menominee and Schoolcraft counties will be not only be enjoying football but also bringing on the smiles as they solicit donations from the public for their 28th annual Foundation Fund-raiser with theme "Catch a Winning Smile for Foster Grandparents."
Working in local schools and various established worksites Foster Grandparents help children by giving that extra special encouragement with their studies and life skills.
Once again, the area schools and other work stations have been invited to participate by conducting mini-fundraisers during the month of October to celebrate and show their support of their Foster Grandparents. The fund-raiser begins today.
Rapid River Rockets help “kick-off” the annual “Catch a Winning Smile for Foster Grandparents” fund-raiser which begins today. The challenge is “Let’s get ready, get set and go for the touchdown. The goal line is in sight!”
The sky is the limit with ideas on what the schools do to raise their funds. Last year the schools raised $6,450 during the campaign selling smiley faces and smile buttons for a donation of $1 or more, penny wars, pumpkin decorating contest, hat day, pajama day, camouflage day, plus donations from P.T.O's, teacher associations and school boards.
Funds also came from holding football blanket tosses. The Green Bay Packers donate a yearly signed football which brings in a special donation.
The Foster Grandparent Foundation is proud of its public foundation status. This annual fund-raiser provides an opportunity for the public to make donations which in turn are invested and the income earned is used to make an annual grant award to the Foster Grandparent Program. Last year the Foundation's award was $13,200 bringing a total of $182,100 in funds awarded to the Foster Grandparent Program.
This annual fund-raiser, according to Cindy Brock, Foundation President, is needed to show the state and federal funding sources that this program has community support or in grant writing terms, local cash match. Local cash in-kind support is needed to maintain this program in our area.
Fund-raiser planners will host the annual Rally Day celebration on Saturday, Nov. 3, to be held at the VFW Hall, Escanaba. A festive event is planned and the first money tally will be announced. Fund-raiser participants are honored for their participation in the fund-raiser at the Foster Grandparent Christmas Party to be held on Dec. 5. Schools receive their awards in January 2013.
"The Foster Grandparent Foundation takes pride in its working relationship with the Foster Grandparent Program," said Brock. "Supporters such as our local and regional businesses, civic organizations, churches, schools, and individuals demonstrate the asset this program is in our community through their generous donations."
