Girl Scouts from throughout Delta County and Manistique took part in the "Race Like a Girl" event held at the U.P. State Fairgrounds in early September. The event was sponsored by the Upper Peninsula International?Racing (UPIR) and the Delta Bay Area Girl Scouts. Girls were given the opportunity to become part of the "pit crew," learning about the in's and out's of race-car driving and maintenance, changing a tire and checking the oil. A tailgate dinner followed the event. According to Jill Johnson, Community Development Manager for the Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes, GSUSA designated 2012 as "The Year of the Girl" and the race car event was intended to learn new skills.
