Fleeing case moves forward

Officer tackles man in kiddy pool

ESCANABA - An Escanaba man was recently bound over to Delta County Circuit Court on five charges related to drunken driving, property damage and fleeing from police who eventually tackled him in a kiddy pool.

Michael Jon Bergeon, 24, of 6819 M.5 Lane, Escanaba, was arrested during the early morning hours of Aug. 29 after he allegedly struck two vehicles, fled from police in a pickup truck, then ran away on foot.

While responding to a complaint of loud music shortly before 4 a.m. that night, Escanaba Public Safety officers observed a pickup truck hit two vehicles and leave the scene near the 300 block of South 16th Street. After attempting to signal the driver to stop, Bergeon drove away from police at speeds reaching 50-60 miles per hour.

After eluding police on 2nd Avenue South, South 18th Street, 3rd Avenue South and back to South 16th Street, Bergeon exited the truck and fled on foot. During the foot pursuit, an officer tackled Bergeon in a small pool.

Bergeon remains lodged in the county jail in lieu of a $20,000 cash bond.

Bergeon was bound over from district to circuit court on the following charges: operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated - third offense, a five-year felony; driver fleeing and eluding police, a two-year felony; assaulting/ resisting/ obstructing police, a two-year felony; driving on a suspended license, a 93-day misdemeanor; and failure to stop after a collision, a 90-day misdemeanor.
