Spring cleanup was an all-out effort in the 1950's and the results were that Gladstone won Cleanest City Awards in 1958. Delta Ave. was getting a good scrub-down by the Gladstone High School Hi-Y students, directed by Don Pfotenhauer in this picture taken on May 19, 1959. Gladstone won second place in 1958 and first place in 1959. The clean-up drives were directed by Wallace C. Cameron, superintendent of Gladstone Schools. Anyone with an interesting old photograph of local interest may submit it for publication. Although care will be taken with the historical item, the newspaper cannot guarantee its safety or return. It is recommended that a commercial copy of the print be made (not a photocopy). Send or drop off photos, including all information about them, to Daily Press Lifestyles Department, "Remember When?" 600 Ludington St. Escanaba, MI 49829.
