Judge Patrick H. McCauley

KALAMAZOO - The Honorable Judge Patrick H. McCauley died peacefully on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012, at the age of 91. Judge McCauley was born in Gladstone, the eighth of 10 children born to Alexius and Rose McCauley.

He excelled in athletics and academics at Gladstone High School, graduating with honors. He served his country in the Army Air Corps (1942-1945) and U.S. Air Force Reserves (1945-1952), and was a member of the American Legion.

In 1951 he married Mary Joan Steffen, with whom he shared his life for 61 years.

Patrick graduated from University of Michigan Law School in 1954. After working as a lawyer/partner in general law practices, he became district judge of the 9th District Court of Kalamazoo followed by a circuit court appointment in the same district. Upon retiring, he was assigned by the Michigan Supreme Court as a visiting judge throughout Michigan for 15 years.

He served as a faculty member and adviser in a number of judicial educational programs and was active in a variety of commissions, committees and organizations throughout his life. He was a member of the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Michigan, and the Kalamazoo County Bar Association.

Although Pat and Mary Jo had no children of their own, they were close and active godparents to the children of Pat's dear friend and colleague, Robert Colman.

Judge McCauley was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He remained interested in politics and world events and was never one to miss a chance to communicate his thoughts and wisdom to others. He was a man who loved to talk!

Judge McCauley was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jo (May 5, 2012); and his niece, Kathleen McGee (July 9, 2012).

He is survived by his sister, Patricia McCauley of Lansing; his brother, John "Mike;" and sister-in-law, Beverly McCauley of Lansing; nieces, nephews, godchildren and dear friends.

Friends will be received Friday, Sept. 21, from 11 a.m. to noon at Redmond Funeral Home, 4100 S. Westnedge Ave., Kalamazoo 269-343-6156. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1 p.m. at St. Augustine Cathedral, 542 W. Michigan Ave., Kalamazoo, with Msgr. Thomas Martin, celebrant. A light lunch will be served in the Fr. Crowley Center following Mass.

Interment will take place in Fernwood Cemetery, Gladstone.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Diabetes Association or a charity of the donor's choice.
