ESCANABA - Signe Petra Halmeoja, 100, formerly of Rock and Gladstone, passed away Friday, Aug. 31, 2012, at Bishop Noa Home in Escanaba. She was born May 8, 1912, in Escanaba, MICH., and was the daughter of Odin and Mary Ericksen.

The former Signe Ericksen married Maini Halmeoja on Dec. 27, 1933, in Escanaba and he preceded her in death on Nov. 1, 1996. Signe owned and operated the Coffee Shop in Rock for many years. Everyone has memories of her wonderful pasties and homemade pies. Signe's door was always open and she became a mother to anyone who needed or wanted her. She loved to travel and spent many years discovering the country.

Signe P. Halmeoja is survived by: daughters, Judy Johnson of Rock, Helen (Don) Prokop of Stevens Point, Wis., Karen (Trudy) Halmeoja of Tucson, Ariz., Betty (Bruce) Bartlett of Rock; son, James (Cheryl) Halmeoja of Rapid River; eight grandchildren, Jeff Johnson, Mike Johnson, David Lehto, Scott Olive, Sheri Heller, Alan Bartlett, Kevin Bartlett and Dale Bartlett; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by three daughters, Kathleen, Janet and Carol; son-in-law, Paul Johnson; grandchildren, Susan Herrick and Jean Leppanen.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Gladstone. Funeral services celebrating the life of Signe Petra Halmeoja will held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jonathan Schmidt officiating. Burial will take place in the Rock Cemetery. A luncheon will be served following the burial at Faith Lutheran Church in Rock. Signe's family would like to thank the staff at Bishop Noa Home for all the care and love they gave Signe. Memorials can be directed to the Faith Lutheran Church in Rock or the First Lutheran Church in Gladstone. Envelopes will be available at the Anderson Funeral Home.
