POWERS - Despite the fact that North Central had eight penalties that could have been very costly, it didn't have an effect on their chances of winning the game.

The Jets handed a 36-12 beating to the Munising Mustangs on a very emotionally-charged night of football.

The Mustangs struck first with a rushing touchdown by Cody Hayes, but less than a minute later, the Jets scored on a 78-yard touchdown run by Josh Granquist to tie the game at 6-6.

North Central's defense turned on the jets, and their offense backed them up with a 28 yard touchdown pass to Nick Sexton, followed by another red zone drive for North Central. With seven seconds left in the half, quarterback Rob Granquist ran it in himself, smashing directly into defenders to find the end zone and make it 18-6.

Just as things began to look bleak for the Mustangs, Ryan Walther took the final kickoff of the half 80 yards for a touchdown, making the halftime score 18-12.

The Jets broke it wide open in the second half, with their defense denying Munising every step of the way.

North Central had nine penalties in the game, some of which would normally hold a team back. However, every time they seemed to get backed up, they found a way to add more points to the board.

"We had some penalties that really hurt us," said Jets coach Kevin Bellefeuil, "but we didn't hang our heads, we just came back and got back to work."

He added that there is clearly some work to be done at practice next week, but he wasn't completely disappointed with the effort his group put forward.

"They were playing 90 miles an hour all night, so I can't complain," Bellefeuil said.

Both teams entered the game 1-0. Even though Munising lost a hard fought battle, they walked off the field with their heads held high, looking forward to next week's game.

"These are the kinds of things where your team needs to rally around each other, and not play the blame game," said Munising coach Jeff Seaberg. "We've got to get ready to strap it up again next week."

The Jets held Munising's quarterback Austin Kelto to just 4 of 17 for 39 yards. Cody Hayes had 11 carries for 32 yards and a touchdown at running back.

North Central's Josh Granquist took 15 carries for 126 yards, including two rushing touchdowns and a receiving touchdown. Granquist also had a 41-yard touchdown run that was called back on a penalty.

Travis Vincent had 12 carries for 70 yards, and quarterback Rob Granquist led his team to victory by going six for 12 for 117 yards, three passing touchdowns, and a rushing touchdown.

Dyllion Hancheck had nine carries for 44 yards, and a 64 yard touchdown run that was also called back due to a holding call.

Devin Woodrazka had a whopping 79 yards on just three carries, and a 28-yard touchdown reception.

The Jets' resume on Sept. 7 when they host Lake Linden-Hubbell.
