KINGSFORD - Kingsford, playing for titles in five brackets, edged Iron Mountain to capture its own girls tennis tournament Saturday.

Coach Mark Shanks' Flivvers copped the Kingsford Invitational with 17 points, followed by Iron Mountain, 16; Negaunee and Escanaba 13; Menominee 8, and West Iron County, 5.

"Even in the matches we lost, they were very close," Shanks said. "I knew it would be close with Iron Mountain."

Escanaba’s Codi Jenshak battles Kingsford’s Sam Fleming in the No. 1 singles final of the Kingsford Invitational, Saturday. Jenshak posted a 5-7, 6-3, 10-7 (tiebreaker) decision.

Kingsford No. 4 singles Santina Bianco, and No. 4 doubles Jaelyn Jennings-Taylor Jacobson supplied tourney titles.

The Flivvers gained runner-up honors from No. 1 singles Sam Fleming, No. 1 doubles Anna Shanks-Kate Lamy and No. 2 doubles Janay Walters-Ali VanRemortel.

Escanaba's Codi Jenshak, after leading the first set 4-1 and losing 7-5, rallied to beat Fleming 6-3 and 10-7 for No. 1 singles honors.

"Jenshak is a great athlete," Shanks noted.

Flivver No. 2 singles Hannah Tresedder finished third and supplied the deciding 17th point by downing WIC's Maddie Waara.

"Hannah played a super long third set and has lost some close matches this year, but it was to see her get the sealing win," Shanks said.

Mountaineer freshmen singles Katie Brule (No. 2) and Olivia Truscott (No. 3) produced titles and Emily Chang (No. 4) took second. Coach Greg Stegall's Mountaineers also won No. 2 doubles with Elli McCole-AlI Jastremski.

The unseeded tournament was shortened due to the heat, with matches going to three sets decided by tiebreakers.

The unbeaten Flivvers, who defeated Negaunee and Menominee in dual matches as part of the tourney format, host Marquette today.
