PERKINS The Mid-Peninsula Wolverines volleyball team began their season on Monday with a tightly contested battle against Carney Nadeau, which ultimately ended with the Wolverines edging out the Wolves 25-23, 25-23, 25-21.
Just one game in the books and Mid-Pen's coach Traci Lyle can already see definite improvement in her squad from last year.
"I think they looked really good," she said. "They communicated a lot, which I've been pushing quite a bit the last two weeks of practice. Last year, we didn't really do it much, and it was good to see it.
"I think that if we can do that throughout the season, it will really be the difference. If we can do that, we'll do a really good job."
The Wolverines returning senior group is Krysta Van Damme, Kelsie Nummilien, Megan Kayser, and Crystal Hadel, in addition to junior Elle Lancour. Van Damme will be featured as a hitter, but she and Nummilien will be playing all the way around for the most part, depending on what the situation calls for. Kayser is one of the team's setters, with Hadel featured as the libero.
"(Hadel) is just really good at getting to everything," Lyle said. "She's been really working hard in the back row, and really being aggressive."
New members to the Wolverines team are Kelsey Shope, a front row hitter and blocker, Marissa Westlund, a setter, as well as Carly Hansen, Taylor Ledgerwood, Jordan Carlson, and Angie Ruble, all of which will be used in Lyle's arsenal when facing the other teams in the conference this season.
"I think it will be pretty competitive," Lyle added. " Crystal Falls, North Dickinson, and Superior Central are usually pretty solid teams, really quick moving.
Mid-Pen hopes to continue their winning ways this Thursday against Munising as their season continues on the road.
