I have been a registered nurse at OSF St. Francis Hospital for 21 years and a U.P. resident for almost all my life. I've been an active member of the Michigan Nurses Association for years.
I am writing for myself and the other nurses at St. Francis who are proud members of MNA. As advocates for our patients, we believe it's very important for us and our organization to speak out against Congressman Dan Benishek's efforts to end Medicare.
As nurses, our first concern is for the health and safety of our patients. We feel helpless when every day we see our neighbors and community members suffering and risking their lives by skipping medication or doctor visits so they can buy food or pay the rent instead.
Many of our patients rely on Medicare for life-saving medications and care. They are at risk from politicians like Congressman Dan Benishek who will make them pay more for health care. They just can't afford it.
I'm appalled that "Dr. Dan" broke his promise to protect Medicare while voting to protect his own health care and give more tax breaks to millionaires who should be paying their fair share.
Only rich people, insurance companies, and Dr. Benishek himself, will benefit from these votes. Ordinary people, especially seniors, will suffer.
As advocates for our patients, nurses must speak out against this.
Nurses believe that everyone deserves access to quality health care. This is not propaganda forced on us. It is a core value that we fight for, as much a part of our duty as taking care of patients every day.
