Legion presents State Economics Awards

KALAMAZOO - The American Legion Department of Michigan, which annually honors with State Economic Awards for a small, medium, and large business - particularly those that consider the hiring of veterans - has announced its winners for 2012.

Receiving the American Legion 2012 State Economic Award for a medium size business is Stewart Manufacturing Company of Hermansville. Naser Propane Company in Powers received the award for a small-size business.

Stewart Manufacturing provides machine services to customers in the automotive, diesel engine, heavy equipment, mining, agriculture and power generating industries. Examples of products include crankshafts, fly wheels, fuel pump bodies and handles, mounting brackets and water pump components.

Randy McLeod Jr. of Wilson, center, was presented with a plaque on behalf of the Stewart Manufacturing Company in Hermansville. The company was honored by the American Legion Department of Michigan with a State Economics Award for a medium-size business. Making the presentation are: from left, Mark Walker, American Legion National Economics Team member, Washington, D.C.; Richard Chatman, Commander of Department of Michigan; Bill Hafeman, Past Department of Michigan Commander, Powers Post 244; Jerry Merrill, chairman of the Department Economic Committee; General Robert Smith, head of the Michigan Labor and Economic Board, Veteran employment services. The presentation took place during the 93rd Convention of the America Legion, Department of Michigan held in Kalamazoo in late June.

Company president, Greg Stewart, is a veteran himself, having served with the Army National Guard for 21 years. He started the business nearly 10 years ago in 2003.

Randy McLeod, director of manufacturing operations for the company, was in Kalamazoo in late June for the 93rd convention of the American Legion, Department of Michigan and was presented with a plague for the award.

Jeff Naser, owner of Naser Propane, was also in Kalamazoo for the convention..
