FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The baseball season ended for the Delta County Junior Boys' Little League All-Stars (age 13-14) Tuesday as they dropped a 6-3 decision to LaGrange, Ky. in the Central Region tournament.
LaGrange, fueled by Jason Lashley's two-run homer, grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning and added a trio of runs in the fourth for a 6-0 advantage.
Delta County got on the board in its half of the fourth on Logan Lamb's solo shot and Brandon Punzel's two-run blast ended the scoring in the fifth.
The loss dropped Delta County into a tie for the final playoff spot with several other teams. The area boys then learned they missed the quarterfinals by .002 point.
"We gave up one run too many through the tournament," said Delta County manager Tony Punzel. "Otherwise, we would have been in the playoffs. Something was missing today. We didn't hit the ball very well. Defensively, we played pretty well. We just couldn't get it all together."
Starter Jake Peterson pitched slightly more than an inning and absorbed the loss. Brandon Punzel then took over until the sixth, allowing two runs.
"They (LaGrange) were hitting the ball pretty good," said manager Punzel.
Delta County, this year's state champs, finished 2-2 in the regional.
"It was a great experience," said manager Punzel. "We were the underdogs going in, but I think we made some noise while we were there. The kids gave a great effort and it was a fun time. We just came up a little short in the end. Overall, we're pleased with our season."
