Obama defaulted on promises

August 8, 2012

EDITOR:

President Obama has once again defaulted on another of his promises to the American people. His statement, "if you like your plan, you can keep your plan" resonated with many of us. It meant that our healthcare decisions would remain unaffected while those without coverage would receive the care they so desperately need. However, now that the proverbial curtain has been drawn back, we can truly see this law for what it is.

Many people may have overlooked the private plan option that is available under the Medicare umbrella. Roughly 25 percent of Medicare beneficiaries are enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans; which allows them to take their entitlement in the form of a fixed monthly payment to an authorized private insurance plan. This spurs free market competition between insurance firms who provide additional benefits not covered by the traditional Medicare program, such as vision and dental coverage.

The Affordable Care Act drastically reduces payments to MA plans, totaling $150 billion over the course of 10 years. This will force insurers to reduce or remove the additional benefits they provide.

In some rural areas this could mean that insurers will be forced to withdraw their plans entirely - leaving beneficiaries with no option but to opt into the traditional program.

Our seniors will be forced into Medicare plans they neither need nor want. Furthermore, this will only serve to diminish the number of choices available to them and ultimately limit the decision-making power between doctors and their patients. Dr. Dan Benishek has the wherewithal and the knowledge to address these hard hitting issues.

We need commonsense reform from a commonsense Michigander. Vote Dr. Dan Benishek in the fall.
