NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP - The Marquette County Sheriff's Department is investigating a fatal traffic accident involving a motorcycle and semi truck that happened Friday morning.

The accident occurred just after 9 a.m. Friday on U.S. 41 near M-35 in Negaunee Township.

According to obituary information received by the Daily Press, motorcyclist Anthony L. Eagle, 46, of Marquette and formerly of Escanaba, was killed in the accident.

A press release from the Marquette County Sheriff's Department said preliminary investigation revealed the semi truck was traveling eastbound on U.S. 41, with the motorcycle following behind.

Witnesses said the semi was slowing to make a left turn. The motorcyclist was apparently unable to stop for the slowing truck, and struck the rear of the semi.

Eagle was pronounced dead at the scene. The operator of the semi was not injured in the crash.

Police say Eagle was not wearing a helmet and that alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident.

Eastbound traffic on U.S. 41 had to detour via M-35 for approximately two hours due to the crash, which remains under investigation.

Assisting the sheriff's department were troopers from the Negaunee Post, Negaunee Township Fire Department, and Medi-Ride EMS.
