WYOMING, Mich. - Things may have gotten a little scary for a while, but the Gladstone Minor Girls' Little League All-Stars (age 9-10) stayed alive in the state softball tournament by eliminating Rogers City 8-5 in a quarterfinal contest Monday.

Gladstone led 7-1 after 4 1/2 innings. But Rogers City, taking advantage of two walks and a hit batter, scored four times on two hits in its half of the frame to pull within 7-5.

"They (Rogers City) had runners on second and third with two out, but Taelor Zeise made a nice play at first to get us out of the inning," said Gladstone manager Rodney Schwartz. "We didn't play as sharp as we had been playing, but the girls didn't get down when they pulled within 7-5. The girls just played through it."

Gladstone added an insurance run on Taylor Trudeau's single in the sixth.

Trudeau, who went 3-for-3, also ripped an RBI triple in the fifth.

Winning pitcher Brittany Schwartz tossed a three-hitter, struck out 11, walked five and hit a batter.

The contest was delayed 20 minutes to a half-hour in the fourth when Rogers City attempted to protest a substitution.

"The kids kept loose," said manager Schwartz. "They tried to get the crowd into the game during the delay."

Gladstone faces Grandville in a semifinal contest today at 4.
