Children should wear floatation devices

July 30, 2012
Daily Press

EDITOR:

I am writing this letter in regard to your front page pictures on the "free kids fishing derby" Monday, July 23. It is a great service what the local sport clubs do to encourage our youth to get out and enjoy the great outdoors that we in the U.P. are so privileged to have. But I sure hope that the 10 kids who appear in the pictures are good swimmers.

I did not see one child with a life coat on, and some of them appear to be fairly young.

The water that we live and play on in the U.P. is beautiful; but turn your back or blink an eye and it can be deadly.

Parents, things can change faster than we know it. Please think safety when going anywhere near water. Keep your children safe.
