MORAN - A family that was reported missing while canoeing on the Carp River were rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter early Friday, according to the Mackinac County Sheriff's Department.

An Essexville, Mich., man reported his wife, two daughters, and son missing after they didn't arrive at a designated pickup site on their canoe trip. The family was canoeing the Carp River in Brevort Township near Moran. They were expected to arrive at the East Lake Road Bridge at about 9 p.m. Thursday. The Essexville man contacted police when his family failed to arrive.

A ground search was started and a Coast Guard helicopter from Traverse City searched the area by air. At 2:55 a.m. Friday, the helicopter found the family, along with two local men who had joined the search.

They were taken by helicopter to the St. Ignace Airport. All were in good health.
