ESCANABA - The Clergy/Sisters of the Escanaba Diaconate were honored by the Serra Club of Escanaba and the Knights of Columbus, Council 640 of Escanaba, on July 5 at St. Anne's Church. Rev. Fran De Groot, Escanaba Serra Club Chaplain, began the celebration with a Mass at 5 p.m. Before the end of the Mass, the new officers were installed and affirmed their office in the Serra Club. Following the Mass, a dinner was held in the parish hall.
Officers for the Serra Club are: president, William Huebler; immediate past president, Mary Lu Gaudette; secretary, Mary Knoch; treasurer, Richard Ostrander; V. P. Communications, Mary Gierke; V. P. Programming, David Schaaf; V. P. Vocations, Barb VanErman; V.P. Membership, Noma Cretens; and trustees, Marie Theoret, Pat Henderson and Dorothy Kollmann.
Musical entertainment for the event was provided by George and Marie Peterson.
Ed and Crystal Dwyer were the guest speakers at a recent installation ceremony for the Serra Club of Escanaba. The couple spoke about their experiences raising their son who grew up to become a Catholic priest.
Rev. Gregg Heikala spoke about the young men who are in seminary from the local diocese and thanked the Serra Club for their support for the seminarians.
Guests speakers for the evening were Crystal and Ed Dwyer, who gave a talk on their life raising a son, Eddie, who grew up to become a priest. Rev. Ed Dwyer was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Saginaw in 2011.
