BARK RIVER - Elaine "Mary" Young, 68, of Bark River passed away Friday, July 13, 2012, at the Bishop Noa Home after a brief stay. She suffered many years of renal cancer and diabetes and is now at rest.
Elaine, as she was known to her family, but Mary to her friends, was born Oct. 30, 1943, in the Watson area, the daughter of Emery and Edna (LaForest) Sexton. Elaine left home at an early age to make her mark on the world. In California she met and married Ed Price. She later returned to the area and married Donald Young.
Mary was an excellent cook and baker and cooked at many locations in the area, the last being the Redwood in Powers. She was known for her large pasties and her other baked goods were enjoyed by many. She was an avid fisherman, often seen at the Ford River and Black Bridge, catching "the big ones!" She also spent many hours at the casino, the bingo hall and at the bingo tent at the Fair, calling and playing bingo. She had a soft heart and took in many stray cats, dogs, birds and people who needed help or a home.

Mary is survived by five sisters, Ruth Whitney and Phyllis Whitley of Escanaba, Ruby Haralson of Milwaukee, Wis., Doris (Lester) LaCarte and Barbara (Ken) Stokes of Cornell; six brothers, LeRoy (Gerri) and Lester (Bonnie) of Escanaba, Gary (Gayle), Dale (Tracy) and Ronald (Wendy) all of Gladstone and Glenn (Beverly) of Flat Rock; 43 nieces and nephews and numerous great and great great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Betty Summers; and two brothers, Roger and Larry.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 17 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. A luncheon will follow at the United Evangelical Covenant Church in Gladstone.
