Man drowns at Van Riper

Police recover body at Michigamme park

NEGAUNEE - After more than three hours of searching for a swimmer, a dive team recovered the body of a Marquette man in Lake Michigamme in Champion Friday evening, according to Michigan State Police from the Negaunee Post.

Shawn Radcliffe Jr., 38, of Marquette, was swimming with friends at Van Riper State Park when he had difficulties, stated a news release. Radcliffe's friends attempted to rescue him but were unsuccessful, said troopers.

State police were dispatched to the possible drowning at 6:30 p.m. The dive team from the Marquette County Sheriff Department located and recovered Radcliffe's body shortly after 10:30 p.m.

Investigation continues into the incident, said troopers who do not suspect foul play.

Also assisting at the scene were Marquette County Rescue Unit 131, Champion Township First Responders, and Bell Hospital Emergency Medical Services.
