ESCANABA - Thomas Harold Bastien, 69, of Escanaba, passed away Monday, June 25, 2012, at Christian Park Health Care Center in Escanaba following a brief battle with cancer. He was born Oct. 11, 1942, in San Diego, Calif., and was the son of Harold and Marie (Grondine) Bastien.
Tom graduated from Stephenson High School in 1960. He later served in the U.S. Army as a medical aid assistant serving in Korea until he was honorable discharged in June of 1968. Tom worked at Mead Paper Company in Escanaba and then attended Northern Michigan University graduating with a bachelor of science degree in August of 1975. He was employed for 27 years with the state of Michigan Family Independent Agency in the Child Protective Services Division until his retirement in October of 2002. Tom then worked at the Island Resort and Casino in customer relations from 2003 until early 2012.
Tom was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church, coached softball in the 1980s, loved to work crossword puzzles and was an avid weightlifter and enjoyed working out.

Thomas Harold Bastien is survived by: daughter, Jessica (Darren) Bray of Escanaba; grandchildren, Riley, Casey and Landry Bray; brother, Joe (Judi) Bastien of Fond du Lac, Wis.; sisters, Joanie (Gary) Vieaux of Freedom, Wis., Mary (Dave) Haendel of West Bend, Wis.; stepson, Justin (Nicole) Covell of Lewiston, Mich.; several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, June 29, at St. Anne Catholic Church in Escanaba. Mass of Christian Burial for Thomas Harold Bastien will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Anne Catholic Church with Father Fran DeGroot officiating. A luncheon will be served following the funeral services in the St. Anne Catholic Church fellowship hall. Burial will take place in the Stephenson Cemetery in Stephenson, Mich.
