GLADSTONE - Two area fifth-grade students were recently named this year's Disabled American Veterans Local Chapter 24 essay contest winners.
MacKenna Hanson, Gladstone James T. Jones Elementary, and Danica Maki, Escanaba Middle School, wrote the top essays for the topic, "What is the definition of an American?"
MacKenna placed first in Delta County as well as third in the State of Michigan. She won a $100 prize for the county competition plus an additional $100 bond for the state win as well as $100 for her school. Danica earned $75 for her second place finish in Delta County.

MacKenna's parents are Thomas and Nanette Hanson, and her teacher was Laurie Rasmussen. Danica is the daughter of Barbara Norlander and Josh Gaber, and her teacher was Patrick Gannon.
Students from Escanaba, Gladstone, Hannahville, Mid Peninsula, and Rapid River participated in the contest. Local judges were Rick LeMoine, Sandy Sacheret, and Morris Cole.
