ESCANABA - Mary Margaret (Peg) Hanson, 93, former Escanaba and Powers resident, passed away Friday, June 15, 2012, at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility in Powers.
She was born on Sept. 4, 1918, in Dollar Bay, and was the daughter of Joseph and Ethel (Isaacson) Greene. Peg grew up in Senter, Mich., and graduated from Hancock Central High School and then attended Suomi College and later Northern Michigan University. The former Mary Margaret Greene married Harland Hanson on April 4, 1943, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 28, 1976. Peg taught music at Carney-Nadeau Public School and third grade at Powers-Spalding Schools and served on the boards of the Menominee Intermediate School District and the Menominee County Library. She was employed as a social worker for Pinecrest Medical Care Facility in Powers and later for St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba.
Peg served as the organist at Grace Lutheran Church in Powers for almost 40 years, prior to moving to Escanaba. She also directed a community chorus and sang in a women's barbershop quartet.

Peg was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Escanaba, Escanaba Altrusa Club, Delta County Community Concert Association, the Alliance for Women and the Bay Sages.
She did volunteer work at Webster School in Escanaba and the Escanaba Women's Shelter and helped establish the original hospice program in Escanaba. Peg enjoyed music, golfing, playing bridge and was a talented artist. She was an ardent fan of the Packers and, also, the Chicago Cubs.
Mary Margaret (Peg) Hanson is survived by: sons, Dr. Gerald (Kathleen) Hanson of Brookfield, Wis., Ronald (Judith) Hanson of Carmel, Ind.; daughters, Jill (Thomas) Beverly of St. Charles, Ill., and Lorie (Richard)Turri of Elgin, Minn. She had nine grandchildren: Rebecca Hanson, David, Brian, Jeffrey and Kathryn Hanson, Erin InFante, Michael Alschbach, Marissa Beverly and Jamie Beauchamp and two great-grandchildren, Audrey and Nora Hanson. She is further survived by one sister, Barbara Hawksley, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Greene, sister Marilyn Robertson, and grandson, Mark Hanson.
The family will recieve friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, July 2, 2012, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Escanaba. Funeral services celebrating the life of Mary Margaret (Peg) Hanson will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Bethany Lutheran Church with Rev. Eric Heskin officiating. A luncheon will be served following the funeral services in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, Houghton.
