ESCANABA - The Rapid River Rockets were unable to reach the state championship softball game, but four members of the team have landed all-state honors.
Pitcher Heather Sanderson, first baseman Neena Brockway, second baseman Averi Kanyuh and shortstop Ashleigh Monticello have been named to the Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association all-state team in Division 4.
In addition, Ashley Hough became the first Rapid River player to be named academic all-state.
Sanderson, Monticello and Hough, all seniors, will play in the state all-star game at Michigan State University July 20. The D-4 game is at 9:30.
Molly Swajanen of Superior Central earned all-state honorable mention.
The all-regional team includes Sanderson, Brockway, Kanyuh, Monticello, Hough and Swajanen, with Rapid River manager George Kanyuh coach of the year.
The district all-star team includes Hough, Monticello, Kanyuh, Brockway, Swajanen, Mackenzy Shega-Fox and Lindsay Richmond of Superior Central, Aslyn Brockway, Savannah Stenlund and Shannon Wolf of Rapid River, Emily Schummer of Newberry and Rachel Conery of Norway. Kanyuh is coach of the year.
Norway won the sportsmanship award.
