MARQUETTE - Police identified 29-year-old David Scott Meyer Jr. as the victim of a fatal shooting at a home in Ishpeming Friday afternoon.
According to the Ishpeming Police Department, the Ishpeming man had been renting a room for a few weeks at 409 N. Second St., where the incident occurred.
Police said they were alerted to an alleged homicide just before 1 p.m. after an eyewitness - a 31-year-old Ishpeming man who did not live at the home - escaped from the house and led officers back to the residence.
Police said they entered the home and found Meyer lying on the living room floor.
According to Ishpeming Police Chief Dan Willey, Meyer was dead when they arrived. It appeared he had been shot once in the front of the head.
Willey said it appeared only one shot had been fired.
The alleged shooter, a 52-year-old Ishpeming man who also lived at the Second Street residence, was taken into custody at the scene without incident. According to police, he is currently lodged without bond in Marquette County Jail on the following charges: one count of homicide - open murder, a felony punishable by up to life in prison; one count of unlawful imprisonment, a 15-year felony; one count of assault with a dangerous weapon, a four-year felony; and one count of weapons - felony firearm, a two-year felony.
The alleged shooter's name is being withheld pending arraignment.
According to police, the suspect allegedly prevented the eyewitness from leaving the home for about 10 minutes after the shooting occurred, threatening him with the gun if he went to police.
The name of the eyewitness is not being released at this time. Willey said no other people were in the home at the time of the shooting.
Willey said it's believed the suspect and Meyer were having an argument before the shooting, though no details about the disagreement are being released.
"It sounded like it was a dispute that got out of hand," Willey said. "It appears drugs and alcohol may have been involved."
Willey said the suspect had been drinking that day, and that the Ishpeming police had been involved with the suspect more than once prior to Friday's alleged homicide, though Willey offered no further comment on past problems with the suspect.
"We've had some incidents with him ... We've been to the residence before for certain things," Willey said. "We are familiar with (the suspect)."
Willey said the police recovered a 40-caliber handgun from the scene. He declined to say who the gun was registered to.
An autopsy is scheduled at Marquette General Hospital.
The Ishpeming Police were assisted on the scene by the Marquette County Sheriff's Department, Michigan State Police from the Negaunee Post, the Michigan State Police Crime Lab, the Ishpeming Township Police and the Negaunee Police Department.
The investigation into Meyer's death is ongoing.
