MENOMINEE COUNTY - Two Menominee County businesses have been recognized by the American Legion of Michigan for hiring veterans on their work forces.

As "Employers of Veterans," Stewart Manufacturing, LLC of Hermansville and Nasar Propane of Powers are each receiving an award from the state organization during its annual convention in Kalamazoo on June 30.

Stewart Manufacturing has been named the medium employer being honored in the state, and Naser Propane has been named the small employer. The large employer honored by the American Legion is Dow Chemical Employees' Credit Union in downstate Midland.

Stewart Manufacturing employs 13 military veterans, representing about 12 percent of the company's workforce of 105 employees, explained President Greg Stewart.

Stewart said it's an honor for the company to receive the recognition for hiring veterans. He added it's also an honor to hire veterans because they have a good work ethic and are disciplined to handle procedures, stress and long hours.

Stewart, a veteran himself, served with the Army National Guard for 21 years. He and others started the business nearly 10 years ago. Stewart Manufacturing provides machining services to customers in the automotive, diesel engine, heavy equipment, mining, agriculture and power generating industries. Examples of products include crank shafts, fly wheels, fuel pump bodies and handles, mounting brackets and water pump components.

Naser Propane was nominated for the state award by the Tony Revord Powers-Spalding American Legion Post 244, according to Jeff Naser, company owner.

"I was very surprised to be recognized for the award," Naser said, adding that veterans are always a plus to hire because of their work background. A total of 30 percent of the company's employees are veterans. The home delivery propane company has been in business since 1935.

The two local companies are among the award winners from the Upper Peninsula to be honored by the American Legion of Michigan.

Other awards the American Legion presents annually include Teachers of the Year, Scout of the Year, and Firefighter of the Year. Employment service awards will be presented along with honors for organizations that help disabled persons and homeless veterans. Several scholarships will also be awarded at the state convention in Kalamazoo.
