GLADSTONE - Garfield (Garry) Lee Herbert, 77, of 2722 South Hill Road, Gladstone, passed away unexpectedly Friday, June 1, 2012, at St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba. He was born Jan. 9, 1935, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and was the son of Sydney and Winnifred (West) Herberts. Garry was educated in Canada, was awarded Canada's King's Scout badge on Feb. 6, 1950, and immigrated to the U.S. at age 24. He joined the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Ord, Calif., for six months and 2-1/2 years with the 39th Ordinance Company in Verdun, France, followed by an honorable discharge for his service. He then became a naturalized American citizen and lived in Upland, Calif.
Garry married the former Mary Dannielle Hill on Nov. 15, 1969, in Nevada.
They moved to the U.P. in l975. Garry retired from the Eaton Corporation in Gladstone. He attended Memorial United Methodist Church, was a member of the Terrace Bluff Golf Club, was honored as life term Ambassador of the Youth Assistance Program in 2006, associate member of the Delta Chamber of Commerce and active in many community events.

Garry is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mary Dannielle Herbert; daughter, Laura Lukezich; grandchildren, Eric and Megan Lukezich, also Tom Lukezich, all of Gladstone.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 5, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Gladstone. Graveside committal services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, at the Fernwood Cemetery in Gladstone with Rev. Elizabeth Hill officiating and burial will take place in the Fernwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the Youth Assistance Program (YAP) c/o 812 Ludington St., Escanaba, MI, in Garry's name.
