Old And New

Nagy, Houghton girls repeat as golf champs; Rochester, Houghton boys win

ISHPEMING - It was a case of something old and something new Friday at the Upper Peninsula Division 1 boys and girls prep golf championship at the Wawonowin Country Club in West Ishpeming.

Senior Mike Nagy of Manistique won his third peninsula title and the Houghton girls repeated as U.P. champs.

But Marquette Senior High School's Avery Rochester captured her first finals crown, as did the Houghton boys.

The heavy pre-tournament favorite, Nagy, carded a 2-under-par 70 to beat runnerup Drew Scheenemun (75) of Gladstone.

Kingsford's Nick Baldwin (77) and Houghton's Brendan Longhini (77) tied for third, with Menominee's Brandon Anderla also pocketing a medal for finishing fifth (78).

"I should have been better with six birdies," said Nagy, a University of Tennessee golf recruit who carded a 35 on both the front and back nines.

"But I had a consistent round with only a couple bad shots. My irons were decent today.

"It feels good to end (my high school career) like this."

Houghton may have surprised its coach, Jack Kumpula, by taking the boys team title with a 329 total.

"This was one of our best scores all season." he said. "We haven't finished first in a meet all year. Today was just our day."

The Gremlins tied Gladstone and Menominee for the best team score, but won the U.P. title with No. 5 golfer Seth Kaarto's 90 being the tiebreaker.

"We're not going to have any trouble saying every stroke counts," Kumpula said. "You just grind it out.

"Having all five (consistent) scores (was important). No kid ballooned, or had a bad day. The strength was all five of them."

Kumpula added freshman Longhini came up big for the Gremlins.

"That tied his best round of the year," the 12-year coach said. "His score helped us get below 330, which was the key."

Marquette junior Rochester, meanwhile, carded an 82 to claim top honors over runnerup Zoe Woodworth (85) of Calumet and Taylor Depski (87) of Negaunee.

"It feels good (being U.P. champ)," said Rochester, who went 40-42 in her round. "I left a few shots out there, but I'm happy with an 82.

"I was hitting my tee shots well today and putting pretty good, too."

Houghton girls coach Corey Markham, in his fifth year, was "real happy" with his team's second straight title. Houghton finished with a 365 to Calumet's 387.

"I was real impressed with the consistency of our team this year," he said. "To throw out a 94 (Friday) for a team total of 365 is phenomenal."

The Gremlins' finished with three golfers tying for fifth with a 91: Kenna Farrey, who claimed the spot on a count-back with Gladstone's Callie Jensen, and Houghton teammates Megan Kelly and Hannah Hill.

Houghton's Bailey Raffaelli finished with a 92.

"The girls were tightly bunched," Markham said. "What a great job they did. To win back-to-back U.P. titles is a great accomplishment.

"This is a young team, too. We have three sophomores and a junior, so we should have a couple more good years in front of us."

Marquette's girls tied for third with Gladstone, each with 405 team scores.

"The girls played well," MSHS coach Ben Smith said, "but those scores Houghton and Calumet put up were real solid."

The Marquette boys, with Brett Heikkila not playing due to a hockey camp in North Dakota, placed fifth with a 334 score. Alex Palmer topped the Redmen with an 80.
