Bark River couple married 50 years

BARK RIVER - Paul and Jean Betters of Bark River are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. Paul and the former Jean Varda were wed June 2, 1962, at St. Francis Xavier Church in Spaulding.

Maid of honor was Lorraine (Varda) Hagedorn, sister of the bride. Best man was Francis Betters, brother of the groom. Attendants were Janet (Chounard) Zanon, friend of the bride, and Hank Varda, brother of the bride. The flower girl and ring bearer were Lil (Charlier) Schotten and Bob Charlier, niece and nephew of the groom.

Paul and Jean are the parents of three children, Michael (Karla) and Bruce (Lisa), both of Waukesha, Wis., and Donald (Kathy) of Sussex Wis. They also have six grandchildren.

During her working years, Jean fit many area residents for their eyeglasses before retiring from UP Ophthalmology and also during previous employments with Herslof Opticians and Shopko Optical.

Paul is a retired millwright with Mead Paper. He enjoys long walks and doesn't go anywhere without his pocket knife while his wife enjoys long talks and is said to not go anywhere without her laptop. They both enjoy volunteer work and spending time with friends and family.

The couple celebrated their anniversary with friends and family at a dinner at the Terrace Bay Inn hosted by their children.
