Ceremonies and activities are planned throughout the area in observance of Memorial Day on Monday. Events include:
RAPID RIVER
The Memorial Day Celebration schedule for Rapid River has been announced. This year's theme is "Thank You American Heroes." Memorial services will be held at the following cemeteries by members of the American Legion Post 301: Group 1, Ognotz, 8:30 a.m./Isabella, 9 a.m.; Stonington, 10:15 a.m./Rapid River, 11 a.m. Group 2, Nahma 8:30 a.m./Isabella 9 a.m.; Indian Pt. 10:15 a.m.

The 5th annual Run for Joe with registration taking place at 7 a.m. and race start at 9 a.m. For registration, contact Amy or Ken Micks at (906) 474-9001.
The parade starts at 1 p.m. with line-up in front of the Omni Center, North Main Street. Appearing in the parade will be Superior Pipes and Drums, sponsored by area businesses and organizations.
South Main Street activities include a flag raising at noon, queen crowning at 12:05 p.m. and grand marshal selection at 12:45 p.m. Activities in the park will start at 10 a.m. and include Abra Cadabra Arcade Jumps, Splat-U-Later, Food and refreshments, Superior Pipes & Drums, Sons of Union Veteran displays, and Bingo in the Pavilion from 2-4 p.m. A raffle drawing will also take place at 5 p.m.
BARK RIVER
Bark River American Legion and Auxiliary Post 438 Memorial Day schedule is: 9 a.m. St. Michael's Cemetery in Perronville; 9:30 a.m. Sacred Heart Cemetery in Schaffer; 10 a.m. West Ford River Cemetery in Hyde; 11 a.m. Bark River Township Cemetery in Bark River.
ESCANABA
The Delta County Veterans Council will pay tribute to all veterans this Memorial Day at the Gardens of Rest Cemetery at 11 a.m. Opening remarks and welcome will be conducted by Rene Lippens. Guest speakers will be Bobby LaMarch. Also speaking will be Mackenna Hanson. MacKenna's essay placed third in the state competition.
Prior to the ceremony, the Council will conduct services starting at 9 a.m. at Holy Cross Cemetery, Lakeview Cemetery and the Delta County Memorial in Ludington Park. They will also place a wreath on the waters on the bridge at Ludington Park.
Following the ceremonies at the Gardens of Rest, rolls and coffee will be served. The public is welcome.
Rock
Post 559 will conduct Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 28 at the Rock Cemetery. The Post bugler will play reveille to the flag. American Legion Department of Michigan 2012 Police Officer of the year, Ron Koski, will be the guest speaker. In the event of rain, Post 559 will conduct the service at the Rock Lions Club.
MANISTIQUE
The Memorial Day program has been announced for Schoolcraft County. The program begins at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial site on the courthouse grounds. Master of ceremonies will be Richard Ketcik. Darrell Dixson will sing The National Anthem and Rev. Jay Martin will provide a musical selection on the bagpipes.
In case of rain, services will be held at the Manistique High School gym, on schedule. The Schoolcraft County All-Vets will perform memorial firings at the following cemeteries starting at 9 a.m., Lakeview, Fairview Cemetery, and Lakeside Park (across from Big Boy). Blue Star flags are available for all service personnel spouses and parents.
HERMANSVILLE
Floriano-Stecker American Legion Post 340 of Hermansville is making extensive plans for the Memorial Day exercises to be held at the Hermansville and Faithorn cemeteries on Monday.
State Rep. Edward McBroom will be the principal speaker at both cemeteries. The North Central High School band will perform at the Hermansville cemetery. Cub Scouts Pack 578 and the Boy Scout Troop 578 of Hermansville will participate at both cemeteries.
GLADSTONE
American Legion Escanaba River Post 115 will hold Memorial Day ceremonies Monday at the following cemeteries: Watson Cemetery at 9 a.m., Northland Cemetery at 9:30, and Flat Rock Cemetery at 11:30.
