Use local maintenance workers in schools

May 24, 2012

EDITOR:

School budgets are important, but with local connections attached. If local taxpayers money is used to improve our schools, then why not local taxpayers maintaining them? It wouldn't be fair to "privatize," using downstate laborers, when we have the ability of very fine, responsible and interested maintenance workers right here in our own area.

We are looking to save, but we should be realistic about who would do the saving. Would there be anyone more dedicated than our own? Besides, it seems insulting to us to have our own good people unemployed while outsiders come in who may or may not have our best interests at heart.Hopefully, we save money with the intention of keeping our own programs complete, such as musical endeavors like band and orchestra. These programs are why our local taxpayers support our schools. We want the best programs. We also need to innovate around what we have available right here.

Hopefully, our community's dedication to our schools includes our own local, hard-working men and women maintaining them. After all, if our local money builds the schools then our local money should maintain them. To hire outsiders could kill the spirit we have for our local schools.
