Dorothy M. Larson

MUNISING - Dorothy M. Larson, 98, of 179 N. Maple Ave., Manistique died April 26, 2012, at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising.

She was born July 8, 1913, in Manistique, the daughter of Andrew and Helga (Norberg) Nelson, and attended Manistique Area Schools. She was a graduate of Manistique High School.

On Dec. 19, 1936, the former Dorothy M. Nelson married Richard E. Larson in Manistique. They made their home and raised their family in Manistique. Richard preceded her in death on April 22, 1990.

In addition to being a homemaker, Dorothy was employed at the Hi-Way Motel in her earlier years. She later became a teacher's aide for the Manistique Area Schools and worked at the Fairview and Lakeside Elementary schools, thoroughly enjoying her work with the children.

Dorothy was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Manistique, the ELCW, Sarah Circle, the Zion Choir, and was also an active member of the Altar Guild and the Zion Quilters Group. She was a former member of the Manistique Choral Club.

She enjoyed the outdoors, berry picking, going on picnics, and spending time at the family camp on Steuben Lake. She also enjoyed playing cards. She was a avid high school sports fan, attending games when she could and if not, listening to high school sports on the radio. She loved learning games and was a fan of TV's High School Bowl and Jeopardy.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Karen (Tom) Derwin of Munising; son, Larry (Donna) Larson of Calumet; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Larson of Manistique; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, two great-great-great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, C. Richard Larson in 1991; her brothers, Verner, Malcolm, Walter and Palmer Nelson; and her sisters, Lily Farley, Ruth Nelson and Ellen Landis.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Sunday, April 29, 2012, at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique and also from 10-11 a.m., Monday, April 30 at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, April 30, 2012, at the funeral home with Pastor David Hueter officiating.

Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery at Manistique.
