GLADSTONE - The Delta County Jaycees will be holding its annual Cardboard Classics event Saturday at the Gladstone Sports Park/Ski Hill, according to the event's organizer.
The event will begin with registration from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., with races beginning at 12:30 p.m. Entry fee is $2 per racer, but spectators are welcome to attend free of charge.
According to Kassi Howard, chairperson for the 2012 Cardboard Classics, there will be a number of prizes awarded to the winners of the races.
"There are eight different classes that will be racing and each class has trophies for first and second place with a ribbon for third place," she explained.
"We also have a Showcase category in which the sleds are judged on appearance, workmanship, and creativity in which the winners will receive cash prizes for first through third place."
Howard said the event has been taking place for the last five to six years, weather permitting. As of now, this year's event is still underway, even with the lack of snow received this winter.
"Even though the weather hasn't really been cooperating with regards to the amount of snow we've gotten this winter, it has been cold enough that the Gladstone Ski Hill has been able to make snow and has been operational," she said.
However, if conditions at the hill are unfavorable for the event, the decision to cancel would be made by noon today in order to get the word out to the public.
"In the event that this Saturday's event has to be cancelled due to lack of snow or dangerous hill conditions, we do have a makeup date scheduled for the following Saturday, Feb. 18, with the times and registration and racing to stay the same," she said.
Howard said the Jaycees invite everyone to come out and have a great time.
Sleds used in the races are to be made entirely of cardboard, tape and glue, with paint, paper, and wax also allowed. The maximum width and height of sleds is no greater than 8 feet and the maximum length is no greater than 20 feet.
