ESCANABA - A Gladstone man, charged with child abuse and domestic violence, is scheduled to be tried on the charges during a five-day trial in April, court officials announced Wednesday.

Allen Joseph Brunette, 23, was arrested last fall following investigation into the beating of a four-year-old boy who was under his care. During a pretrial conference hearing in Delta County Circuit Court on Wednesday, a trial date was set for April 16-20.

On Oct. 14, the child's mother brought her son to the emergency room at OSF St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba where personnel notified police of the patient's injuries. The boy was transferred by ambulance to Marquette General Hospital where he was admitted for the weekend.

Brunette was charged with first-degree child abuse and domestic violence, third offense. He remains lodged in Delta County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 cash bond.
