NEWBERRY - A Newberry organization was recently found in violation by the Michigan Liquor Control Commission for setting up a Super Bowl pool, according to the organization's manager.
The Newberry Elks Lodge was recently reported to officials from the MLCC, with a local office in Escanaba, who then visited the Elks Lodge to confiscate the materials.
"They (the MLCC) said they are illegal," Newberry Elks Lodge Manager Cindy Groh. "No matter what, they are illegal. It's just plain gambling and there's no license for it."
Groh said it will take a few months for their violation to be processed, but said she does not know the extent of any penalties they may receive.
The MLCC falls under the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, according to LARA's website, michigan.gov/lara.
According to the FAQ section of their website, Rule 436.1013 prohibits unlawful gambling and gambling paraphernalia on MLCC licensed premises, however, legitimate gambling as licensed by the Michigan Bureau of State Lottery or the Michigan Gaming Control Board is acceptable.
