MANISTIQUE - Three snowmobilers, who were arrested last week after fleeing from police in Schoolcraft County, are scheduled to appear for preliminary examinations in district court this month. A deputy was injured in the incident.

Dawson Gray, 19, of Gwinn, Stephen Combs, 39, of Marquette, and Terry Park, 33, also of Marquette, were arrested after they refused to stop for Schoolcraft County deputies on a snowmobile trail in Hiawatha Township on Jan. 21.

When Gray fled the scene, his snowmobile struck Deputy Mallory Nelson. Nelson was treated and released for minor injuries at Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital in Manistique. Dawson remains lodged in the county jail in lieu of a $50,000 cash or surety bond.

Gray is charged with five counts: assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder; assault with a dangerous weapon; assaulting/resisting/obstructing causing injury to a police officer; assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer; and fleeing and eluding on a snowmobile. He is also being charged as a habitual offender.

Gray is scheduled to appear for a preliminary examination in district court on Monday. Combs and Park waived their arraignments and are each scheduled to appear for a preliminary examination in district court on Feb. 22, according to a court official.

Combs is charged with failing to stop for a police officer on a snowmobile, fleeing and eluding police on a snowmobile, reckless operation on a snowmobile, and failing to display a trail permit.

Park is charged with refusing to take a preliminary breath test on a snowmobile, according to court records.

At around 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21, deputies attempted to stop the three snowmobiles for minor violations. When the three snowmobilers fled, Gray's sled struck the sheriff's deputy. Park stopped for police a short distance away from the scene. Deputies found Gray and Combs several miles away.
