Award-winning photographer to conduct digital darkroom workshop

January 30, 2012
Daily Press

ESCANABA - Attention photographers. It may be that 2012 is the Year of the Photograph at the Bonifas Arts Center. There's the juried show in September, with all pieces from the Upper Peninsula, chosen by Wisconsin photo wizard Chris Winter of the Milwaukee Discovery Center. Winter will present a workshop, too, in July.

In the meantime, area individuals are invited to learn all about the digital darkroom from a Delta County wizard, Mike Olson from Genesis Graphics. Olson has won many prizes for his photography, and is the printer of choice for many other area photographers. He'll present "In the Studio: Intro to Digital Darkroom Techniques" on Wednesdays, Feb. 1 and 8, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Olson will teach photographers what to shoot in the field and how, as well as readying the photos for print using a digital darkroom. Participants will learn levels and curves, cloning, scaling for print, and sharpening. Olson will also discuss the ethics, creativity and technology of the art.

The attending the workshop are invited to bring in an image on a disc or thumb drive to edit and revise and will be able to see directly what kind of difference the workshop can make.

Cost for the workshop is $22 for Arts Center members and $28 for the general public. For information and to register, visit www.bonifasarts.org or call 786-3833.
