HARRIS TOWNSHIP - A Bark River family remains flabbergasted over a pair of crop circles discovered on their property Thursday.
The Jorasz family found the two circles in a cornfield approximately one mile from their home off U.S. 2 and 41 in Harris Township.
"It's eery - everyone says this is really weird," Sue Jorasz said Friday.
According to Sue, one of the couple's six sons, Mark, was using a combine to harvest the cornfield when he noticed the circles. Mark then got on top of the combine, contacted his father and took pictures with his cell phone
According to John Jorasz, upon his arrival at the field, he noticed what appeared to be perfect circles about 100-150 feet wide and 100 yards apart.
"I don't know what could do that," said John. "The corn plants are bent at ground level in a counter-clockwise pattern, and it looks like a perfect circle."
The circles look to be almost identical, added John, and he is unsure of whether or not there are any more in the field. John also pointed out that each stalk is bent completely to the ground, with no damage to the surrounding stalks.
"It had to have happened very recently, because the corn plants are still in good shape," he said. "They aren't dried our and haven't turned black or anything."
There were no footprints or equipment marks anywhere near the circles, and John noted the corn that has been flattened would not be salvageable.
"I just don't know how to explain it - it's just unique," he said. "If it's a prank, they sure took a lot of time to do it."
One of the Jorasz' sons, Matt, explained that circles like those in the cornfield would be difficult for any one person or group of people to make without leaving some sign that they were there.
"It would be pretty hard, because you would see the trails going in there or something," he said. "The corn on the outside is untouched."
The Jorasz' think that the circles were made approximate three days ago, since John was harvesting a field adjacent to the affected field on Monday.
"Monday, I harvested that field," John said, pointing across the road from the circles. "A paraglider flew over, so, I'm thinking, if it was there on Monday, they would have spotted it."
After finding the circles, John did some research on the Internet and found that the only other "reported" crop circle in Delta County was found in 1964.
"The people were in bed and heard something out in the hayfield at night," he explained. "They heard noise and saw lights, and then they went out the next morning, and the hay was all knocked down and there were some burn spots."
While there are no marks in his crop circle, John points out that some of the websites detailing crop circles say radiation may be present when burn marks are not. To this, John, who has been farming since the mid-1960s, merely shrugs his shoulders.
"I don't really know," he said. "I've never seen anything like it."
Matt agrees.
"I see it on TV and stuff, but not around here," Matt said. "Especially for my dad to say he's never seen something like this before.
"He's seen it all."
