SAULT STE. MARIE - Escanaba's Andrew Stenberg shined nearly as bright as the sun on a very warm Saturday, earning top honors in the Sault Ste. Marie Elks cross country meet.
The junior harrier covered the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 40 seconds. Teammate Brad Derouin placed fourth (18:01), with Jordan Ogren seventh, Ed Terres 15th and Eric Cousineau 16th.
"Andy ran pretty well," said Esky coach Jake Berlinski. "The course was tough and some of the times were a little slow. Some of the kids were a little disappointed in their times. But they have to remember that was a tough course and it was hot out there."
Petoskey won with 28 points, with the Eskymos runners-up at 43 on a day which the temperatures hovered in the upper 70s.
The South Lyon girls won and Esky finished in the middle of the pack.
"That girls' team from South Lyon was unbelievable," said Berlinski. "I think their top jayvee runner would have been second on our varsity. We don't see many dominant girls' teams like that."
Esky sophomore Aubree Peterson placed eighth (21:30). Jordyn VanPortfliet was Esky's No. 2 runner, followed by Dominique Bougie, Olivia Nash and Isabelle Wellman.
"Aubree ran a strong race," said Berlinski. "Dominique has really come on the past 4-5 races and Isabelle has been a nice surprise for us."
Esky ran without Joanie Stacey, left at home with a sinus infection.
Esky visits Flat Rock Thursday for the Great Northern Conference meet.
