What is happening to our country?

EDITOR:

I am very concerned about what is happening to our country. The people running the show are making a mess out of the greatest country in the world. A quote from George Santayana comes it mind: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." We have had a number of presidents who have tried to solve recessions by throwing money at the problem. These have always failed to correct the problem but still these people keep doing the same old thing. Insanity: doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result.

The presidents who have thrown our money to solve a recession are know as progressives. Right after World War I there was a recession. Woodrow Wilson tried to spend money to get us out of the problem. It was a failure. To the rescue came Calvin Coolidge who reversed course and the 1920s were one of greatest economic periods in our history. President Coolidge was not a progressive. Next up was the stock market crash of 1929. Herbert Hoover tried the progressive cure and it was a dismal failure. This led to the election of FDR who campaigned as a tight moneyman, but once in office he showed his true progressive colors. The unemployment rate soared to over 20 percent and stayed there until we started gearing up for World War II. In 1939 FDRs Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau said, "We are spending more money than we have spent and it does not work."

One thing the progressives did do was develop the attitude that the government will take care of our problems. Before the progressives gave us all of these programs, people helped one another. The main purpose of all these new programs was to get voter support. Another progressive, LBJ, gave us the Great Society program. The damage that this program has done to us is beyond belief and we are still wasting our money keeping it going.

Richard Nixon campaigned as a moderate but he followed the progressive style and caused any problems for us, as did Jimmy Carter. Ronald Reagan did some necessary things to get us out of the mess. He managed to lower taxes and reign in inflation. One problem is that the Democrats controlled Congress and would not cut wasteful programs. However, we had a "very" good economy for many years.

We now have Barrack Obama in the driver's seat and he is throwing our money around as if we had some. We are broke, foreign governments own much of our debt, and there seems to be no end in sight. One item that he is pursuing is to raise taxes to give the government more money to spend. Also, he is acting like he is in complete charge and our constitution and Congress really do not matter. Obamacare was voted in without any committee hearings and discussion. He has our military engaged in Libya without Congress giving permission. Yes I am worried.
