June 7, 2011
Daily Press

MANISTIQUE - The ancient craft of gourd decorating will lead off a series of classes offered by the new Lake Effect Community Arts Center.

Clarlyn Ledy of Moran will teach two three-hour classes on Saturday, June 18. The morning session will run from 9 a.m. to noon and an afternoon class will meet from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Presbyterian Church of the Redeemer Westminster Room, 314 Main St., Manistique.

Open to teens and adults, the class offers participants the opportunity to create a unique piece of art for themselves. Students will clean and prepare their own gourds and decorate them with embellishments or more complex painting, dying or woodburning designs.

Clarlyn Ledy will be conducting a class on gourd decorating at the Lake Effect Community Arts Center on Saturday, June 18. Participants can register online at www.LakeEffectArts.org or by calling Stephanie Reese at 283-1001. Deadline for registration is Thursday, June 16.

Ledy, who taught high school, discovered her love of gourd decorating in retirement. The owner/operator of The Gourd Barn in Moran holds classes there in addition to selling her gourds. She is a member of the American Gourd Society and teaches throughout the country.

The class fee is $35 per person and includes the gourd and materials needed to create your own beautiful piece of artwork. Participants can register online at www.LakeEffectArts.org or by calling Stephanie Reese at 283-1001.

Deadline for registration is Thursday, June 16. However, Reese urges those interested in taking the class to not wait. "Enrollment is limited to six students per class," she said.

Additional classes in other media will be offered over the summer and announced soon.

The non-profit Lake Effect Community Arts Center was created by a group of artists and other interested residents to encourage and nurture the arts in the Schoolcraft County area. It will support and facilitate participation in visual arts, music, theater, and dance by offering classes, workshops, exhibits, public performances, sales gallery and related services.

Memberships are available in this newly created arts organization and are $35 a year. Further information is available online at www.LakeEffectArts.org.
