KINGSFORD - Superior Central track coach Chris Messano was unable to attend Saturday's Upper Peninsula Finals, but was pleased with some of the reports he received from Kingsford.

The Superior Central girls slipped past North Dickinson 47-45 for third place in the Division 3 standings while Messano was at a wedding downstate.

"I was getting updates," Messano said Sunday in a telephone interview. "I can imagine everybody was excited."

Brett Bryant of Rapid River l won the 400 dash in Division 3 Saturday in Kingsford.

Brimley gained its third title in four years with 96 points. Runner-up Forest Park had 61.

Superior Central junior Lauren Spranger set the U.P. and school record in the 400-meter dash in 58.7 seconds and was runner-up to Munising senior Amy Kerst in the 800 in a personal-best 2:29.57.

"I focused on getting out faster and got off to a good start," Spranger said moments after holding off Kerst in the 400. "I didn't know if she had a kick. I just wanted to keep running as fast as I could. I wanted to see if I could hit a 58."

Kerst, clocked at 59.64 in the 400, set U.P. records in the 800 (2:21.61) and 1600 (5:17.2). Her efforts topped the previous bests by Big Bay de Noc's Erin Holmberg of 2:23.72 (2007) and 5:21.06 (2008), respectively.

She was then runner-up to North Dickinson senior Erica Johnson in the 3200, who took that race in a U.P. record 11:51.06. Holmberg was also the previous recordholder in the 3200, running an 11:59.89 in 2007.

Superior Central freshman Teslyn Tyner was runner-up in the 200 (27.44) on a lean to Dollar Bay senior Brittany Engman and placed third in the 100 (13.06).

"Lauren and Teslyn are pretty neck and neck in the 200," said Messano. "What Lauren did yesterday was very impressive. Also, not one girl is graduating. Our relays should be real solid next year. Overall, I'm pleased with the season and the way we performed."

Mid Peninsula senior Chelsey Gerou won shot put at 34 feet, 11 1/2 inches and sophomore teammate Krysta VanDamme placed third (31-1 3/4).

Brimley set a U.P. record in the 800 relay (1:50.61) and freshman Tabitha Graham tied the high jump record (5-5).

The Cedarville boys edged Pickford 85-78 for their first title in 30 years when they were crowned Class D champions. Third-place Forest Park scored 65 points.

"This was an Eastern U.P. bonaza," said North Central coach Jerry Root. "Teams from that area did very well."

North Central senior Tyler Arnold set the D-3 U.P. record in the 100 (11.62), edging Pickford junior Jordan LaVigne on a lean.

"I got out of the blocks pretty good today," said Arnold. "Last week, I stumbled out of them (in the Skyline Conference meet). This is my favorite race. I would have hated to lose this one. I was healthy this year and that made a difference. Experience also helps. I feel a little more comfortable in the blocks. I find that I don't false start as much."

"That was a big win for Tyler," said Root. "He also anchored our 400 relay and ran a tremendous split. We took second and ran our best time of the year in the 400 relay (47.65) our 1:38 in the 800 relay (for third) wasn't shabby either. Yet, taking fifth in the 3200 relay was our biggest surprise."

The Jets finished the highest among area teams, taking seventh with 37 points.

Rapid River junior Brett Bryant captured the 400 (52.75). He was fourth coming out of the back stretch prior to rallying for his first U.P. title.

"That was a tight race, but I pulled through," said Bryant. "I'm always solid in the (home) stretch. I feel I have an obligation to our coaches because they expect me to win. I give much of the credit to Mr. O (coach Steve Ostrenga). I appreciate everything he has done for me."

Lake Linden-Hubbell senior Brett Gervais set the long jump record (21-1).
