Saluting the best and brightest

May 27, 2011
Daily Press

Every Friday, the Daily Press has the opportunity to showcase some of the best and brightest students in the area. It's called the Student of the Week page. Each Friday, from October through May, students nominated by local school officials are profiled as students of the week.

The program culminates at the end of the school year when the Student of the Year is chosen from nine finalists - one from each area school. That graduating senior is given a $1,000 monetary award by the Daily Press. Finalists for Student of the Year are each awarded $100.

Today, the 2011 Student of the Year is being announced. It is an exceptional person by the name of Raquel Johnson, a member of Escanaba Area High School's Class of 2011. You can read about Raquel in today's paper.

She is just one of over 380 outstanding students the Daily Press as profiled as Students of the Week during the last school year. One thing is certain, there is no shortage of remarkable youth in the area. Each and every student that has appear in this section represents the best of their school. The area is quite fortunate to have these students among our citizenry. They enhance our area and help make it the great place to live that it is.

Schools who are part of the Student of the Week program are: Mansitique High School, Escanaba High School and Middle School, Holy Name School, Bark River-Harris School, Rapid River School, North Central School, Nah Tah Wahsh PSA, Mid Peninsula School, Gladstone High School and Junior High School, and St. Francis de Sales School.

All students profiled as Students of the Week are chosen by officials and staff at each of the schools listed. We would be remiss if we didn't take a moment to thank all those people who helped bring these students to us and our readers. Your time was certainly not wasted. You helped enlighten local residents about the overwhelming amount of "good kids" who call the local area home.

The Students of the Week program has come to and end for this school year. We look forward to bringing you more exceptional students in the 2011-12 school year.
