United Way urgently needs support

December 6, 2010
By Estelle Smyth

ESCANABA - The United Way of Delta County will soon conclude its 2010 fund-raising campaign. To those who already have given, thank you. To those who have not, I am making an urgent request for you to step up and help your neighbors and friends who are struggling. Funds raised in Delta County stay in Delta County.

Each year, volunteers review our member agencies' grant requests, program goals and budgets to ensure they are making a difference in our community and that the funds entrusted to United Way are making the greatest impact. This year we expect more than a dozen requests for program funding ranging from $4,000 to over $40,000.

To date the campaign has raised about $160,000 - only 65 percent of our $250,000 goal. We need to reach our goal by Dec. 31, and I believe we can make it. Our agencies, and the people who need their services, are counting on it. A gift does not have to be large to make a difference - everyone's help is needed! Your contribution whether it's $5 or $500 continues to provide the resources and help needed and would not be available if it weren't for the generosity of people like you. And, think about it, your contribution along with everyone else adds up to the necessary funding needed to meet our goals. (Ah the old saying, 'United We Stand') but I digress.

There are many ways to give. If your company has a United Way campaign, you can give through payroll deduction. You can call the United Way office at 786-3736 or send a check to 1100 Ludington St., Suite 300, Escanaba. You also can give online with a credit card by visiting

Thank you for helping us meet the needs of those in need.
