Municipal Dock project shows holiday spirit

November 30, 2010

Area businesses, groups and individuals have an excellent way to exhibit their holiday cheer this year.

As in past years, the public is being invited to adopt a tree at the Escanaba Municipal Dock for the holidays. Residents are invited to decorate the trees with holiday lights and erect decorations for everyone to enjoy. The goal is to have as many trees and decorations lit up at the Municipal Dock as possible.

An area boasting that many Christmas decorations would truly be a sight to behold.

The idea is not a new one. It has been around for several years. It was the brainchild of local resident Bonnie Wenick-Kutz. Like many other Delta County residents, she has had the opportunity to drive through the the town of Oconto many times while traveling through Wisconsin. A campground there - visible from the highway - boasts an impressive and extensive display of Christmas lights and decorations every year.

Wenick-Kutz had the wonderful idea to try to do the same thing at Escanaba's Municipal Dock. There have been lights there every year since - more some years than others.

We believe the Municipal Dock display is a great way to dress up Escanaba for the holidays and urge everyone to take part. It's a great way to show your holiday cheer and to help brighten the holidays for our fellow residents.

It's easy to take part. Simply find a tree at the Municipal Dock with a number hanging from it. Call 789-0900 to register the number and begin decorating the tree with lights. Anyone interested in decorating trees with lights may do so as long as no ornaments are placed on them.

Participants may also bring a tree to the Municipal Dock and decorate it with lights. The city of Escanaba will provide the electricity and keep the sidewalk around the dock clear of snow. The placement of outdoor greeting cards and lighted Christmas figures or Christmas scenes is also encouraged.
