ESCANABA - Several Veterans Day ceremonies and dinners will be held on Thursday to honor all veterans. They include:
The Delta County Veterans Council will conduct a Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Thursday at Gardens of Rest. The program will begin with a prayer, followed by a song, placing of wreaths by the Gold Star Mothers, ringing of the bells, and the introduction of former prisoner of war Tom Carmody. Guest speaker will be Army recruiter David Cowell.
Gladstone American Legion Post 71 invites the community to its annual Veterans Day Dinner scheduled for Thursday at Gladstone American Legion Hall, 802 Delta Ave., Gladstone. Cocktail hour will begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30. Cost is $5 per person. Guest speaker will be CM Sgt. John Malchow, retired. RSVP by calling Gladstone Legion, 428-1050.
Floriano-Stecker American Legion Post 340 of Hermansville will hold an observance of Veterans Day at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Veterans Memorial Marker on First Street in Hermansville. The public is invited to attend.
Participants are invited to assemble in the American Legion Club Rooms at 10:15 a.m. for a continental breakfast. The March to the Veterans Marker will take place at 10:45 a.m. Transportation will be available for those unable to make the march. Requests must be made ahead of time. Following the program at the marker, lunch will be served in the Legion Club Rooms.
The traditional Veterans Day dinner will be prepared and served by the Auxiliary in the Club Rooms. Social hour will begin at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6. Principal speaker for the dinner program will be Jeremy Tarris, an area veteran who recently completed his second tour of duty in Iraq.
The Mid Peninsula School will conduct a Veterans Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Thursday in the gym. The public is invited to attend. The school will host Rock American Legion Post 559 and Perkins American Legion Post 540 and their auxiliary units. Wayne Roy, commander of the Rock Post, will be the guest speaker.
American Legion Escanaba River Post 115 and its auxiliary will present a program on Veterans Day for the Wells Township School on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. A short meeting will follow the presentation. Members are asked to arrive by 9:15.
The Hannahville American Legion Post 116 and Auxiliary will hold a Veterans Day service at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Nah Tah Wahsh School. The legionnaires and auxiliary members will speak for approximately one half-hour, followed by the playing of the Star Spangled Banner and Taps. Services will conclude with roll call of all deceased veterans from Hermansville.
The Escanaba Vet Center, 3500 Ludington St., Escanaba, will hold an open house from noon to 6 p.m. on Thursday to celebrate all veterans who served their country. The event is open to all veterans, family, members, and friends who wish to attend.
