GLADSTONE Eugene Louis and the former Laura Brownell were married 60 years ago on Aug. 19, 1950, at the Naval Chapel on the U.S. Naval Base, Newport, R.I.
The anniversary dinner was held at a local restaurant, and was attended by all five of their children - John (Mary) of Houghton, Gary of Farmington Hills, Mich., Colonel Wayne (Shelly) Louis, U.S. Airforce, retired, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Laurene (Keith) Clark of Gladstone, and Darren of Stamford, Conn. In addition, five of the couple's seven grandchildren, along with two great-grandchildren and some of the couple's friends joined in the celebration.
Gene left Escanaba in 1940 to live in Manitowoc, Wis., where he graduated from Lincoln High School in 1943. He went to active duty with the U.S. Navy on July 1, 1943, and was commissioned Ensign USNR on March 29, 1945. After serving until July 1958, he and Laura and their family returned to live in Escanaba.

He was employed by Harnischfeger, as an industrial engineer for three years before he joined the Prudential Insurance Company as a sales agent; retiring in March of 1985.
Laura was employed by Shopko in 1971, retiring in 1992.
The couple has resided in Gladstone for 47 years. They've enjoyed traveling, reading and cooking. Gene also hunts and watches sports on TV.
